7 questions to ask when choosing between two job offers

7 questions to ask when choosing between two job offers7 questions to ask when choosing between two job offersWith the insecurity surrounding the job application process, having to pick between two offers is certainly a good problem to have. But it can be a problem, nonetheless. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when weighing offers from each employer. What do I remember from the interview?Monster career expert Vicki Salemi told the site about clues to think about when deciding between offers.Weigh any red flags that emerged during the interview. Was the boss checking emails while you were speaking? Or did the interview last until 7 p.m. and welches the office was still full of people working?Candidates often overlook one of the most important and intangible factors- their boss. How well did you get along with that prospective manager? Did you like him or her? Salemi told Monster. Also think about if youll want to be associated with this employer - and its culture - for the res t of your career, no matter where you go.(This might be a little premature, but say you choose the offer from the place that ends up not having best company culture Heres how to distance yourself from it in future interviews.)Will this job help me get what I want in work and life? While pursuing bigger and better salaries with every new job - positiv the need to scale the corporate ladder - you can getwildly off track when it comes to your career and your life.Work shouldnt be your everything, but as what you really want slips out of focus, you might find it hard to say no to things that will just benefit you financially. But its important to remember where you ultimately want to be, and find people along the way who can help you get there. What will my paycheck and benefits look like? While money isnt everything, the need for the perfect side hustle is all too real at times, so youll want to get a job that helps you and your family work toward increased financial stability. But dont forget about benefits- what insurance does your employer provide? Will you be able to keep saving for retirement?Consider where you want to be financially, and to what degree this job can help you move forward. How long is the commute?Spending a whole lot of time on a train, bus, or in a car to and from work translates into higher transportation costs for you, so figure out what youre willing to spend - and how long youre willing to sit.Heres how to handle your commute, plushow to prepare for a dangerous one. Will I be able to move forward professionally here? After all, you dont want to be employed by a company where promotions arent even an afterthought.Working somewhere that provides training, no matter what professional stage youre in, and gives you chances to eventually take on increased responsibility is key.Do I believe in what the company stands for? With the need for meaning at work, you can use this as an opportunity to finally land a position where you feel (at least somewh at) fulfilled.Think about it Do you care about the companys ultimate goal? What about the work youd be doing?Whether youll beworking remotely or in an office, youll be spending a significant portion of your workweek on assignments, so you want to care about how that ties into the companys overall vision. What is there to do outside of work?Chance are, you already know if you currently work near this potential employer. But this question becomes especially important to think about when moving to a new city. That being said, make it feel like home by joining clubs, groups, and being open to spontaneous social opportunities.

Skadden slipped past Sullivan Cromwell to take the number three spot Weil and Simpson swapped places in the 6 and 7 positions and Latham bumped its way back into the top ten, sending Covington Burling to 11. As many of you will remember, Latham was a top ten mainstay until 2010, when associates resp onded to the firms layoffs by sending it from 7 to 17. It seems like all is forgiven, however, as the firm rejoined the top ten this year. Our survey respondents proclaimed that Latham is back as top dog, citing its great culture and laid-back vibe.Hogan Lovells also saw a notable jump, from 51 in 2012 to 41 this year. Before its merger with London-based Lovells, Hogan Hartson was ranked 28. Given the failed firm mergers weve seen lately, its understandable that associates were cynical about the newly combined firms outlook. But Hogan Lovells seems like an example of a merger gone right- this years ten-spot jump shows that they are on the upswing and receiving positive feedback from our respondents.Baker Hostetler also ascended the ranks significantly, going from 77 to 68, thanks in no small parte to its front-page role in the Madoff bankruptcy. One firm that is missing from the rankings this year is, of course, Dewey LeBoeuf. Ranked 37 last year, the firm collapsed this year and r ecently filed for bankruptcy.Three firms that were unranked last year joined the Vault Law 100- Fenwick West at 94, Wiley Rein at 97 and Kasowitz, Benson, Torres Friedman at 98. Falling out of the top 100 were Troutman Sanders (ranked 93 in 2012), Littler Mendelson (previously ranked 97), Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton (previously ranked 98), Kelley Drye (previously ranked 99) and Foley Hoag (previously ranked 100).Vault will be releasing the rest of its 2013 Rankings- Best in Practice, Best in Region, Best to Work For and Diversity Rankings- over the coming weeks. Understanding the Solution Sales Process

Understanding the Solution Sales ProcessUnderstanding the Solution Sales ProcessIt seems that many ausverkauf writers, trainers, and self-proclaimed sales gurus suggest that solution sales are the best method to increase your sales, gross profit, and your income. Many suggest that learning how to sell in the solutions sales style is cutting edge and replaces any and all other sales styles. The problem with this thinking is that solution sales is elendhing new and is one of the oldest styles of sales ever invented. Put simply, solution sales is when a professional sells (or tries to sell) a product or service that satisfies a customers need. On the surface, solution sales are when you sell anything except something purely frivolous. The Steps Involved in Solution Sales Since solution sales demand a customers need, the first step involved in solution sales is to either identify, uncover or create a need for your customer. Identifying a customer need essentially entails determining what exact need your customer has as it relates to your products ability to solve the need. Often, your customers need may not be what they believe it to be. Your job is to help the customer identify their true need or needs. Uncovering a customers needs involves digging deep, asking questions and doing some research. For the most part, uncovered needs are not recognized as being needs by a customer, either due to them not being aware that the need exists or not recognizing something as being a need. Another type of need that may need to be uncovered is one that your customer does not want to be revealed. Youll know when youve stumbled upon a need that your customer does not want to be uncovered when you experience resistance, animosity or even anger. Creating a need takes talent, skill and a high level of confidence. Creating a need is just what it sounds like Convincing your customer that they need something that, unless for your convincing, would not be seen by the customer as a need at all. Bringing the Solution to the Sale Identifying, uncovering or creating needs is useless unless you as a sales professional bring a solution to the customers needs. Proposing a solution is what solution sales is all about. If you were to propose a solution to a customer who did not have the need that your product solves, then your proposed solution would not be a solution at all. Your proposal must solve the needs of your customer for it to be seen as a solution. The Problem With Solution Sales In the days before the Internet, customers relied on sales professionals to inform them of solutions to their needs. In most cases, a business manager or owner didnt have the resources to know of proven ways or processes to solve business concerns. But with the overwhelming majority of businesses having Internet access, managers and owners are just a few mouse clicks away from learning proven or suggested methods to overcome both known and unknown challenges. A sales profes sional who focuses solely on finding, uncovering or creating a need that can be solved by a product or service they sell is assuming that their customer is not only fully unaware of the problem but doesnt realize that the problem can be solved and that there are solutions for the problem. Customers are significantly more informed when it comes to learning about industry-specific best practices and are highly motivated by their competition to improve their business processes. What this means for the solution sales professional is that their customers are already aware of the problem, the solution, and the options. So unless you market a very unique solution, relying on the traditional solution sales approach will create very hard to overcome challenges in your sales career.

Their answer might give you an idea if its a company worth settling down with.Tell me about a time you failed.Think of a work-related situation that didnt turn out quite as you had hoped. The interviewer is interested in seeing how you took responsibility for your failure, what you learned from it, and how you would prevent similar failures from happening again.ExamplesI once rushed a project to make a shipping deadline but inadvertently skipped a couple of critical steps. We ended up discovering the mistake before the customer installed the products, but they werent pleased. I never made that mistake again.I thought my aggressive sales tactics were a great quality until I lost a client for being too pushy. Ive since learned to tone things down and really understand my clients needs before determining how to help them.

How to Hire a Senior Accountant

How to Hire a Senior Accountant How to Hire a Senior Accountant There’s no way around it. Your company needs someone to supervise your accounting staff and bookkeeping efforts, prepare financial statements, and analyze balance sheets and income statements. But this is a tough job market, and top talent is hard to find. Even if you think you know how to hire a senior accountant, it’s not going to be easy to find one. The time and effort you put into recruiting for your senior accountant position will be worth the investment. The challenge is knowing what you want, vetting the job candidates and competing for top talent, all without dragging out the hiring process. “Just a few days can make a difference,” says Jill Smith, a Finance Accounting vice president in Des Moines, Iowa. “This is a candidate-driven market, and if your hiring process takes too long, you might miss out on exceptional talent.” So you know you have to push the accelerator, but where do you start? Read on for tips on how to hire a senior accountant. 1. Write a solid job description First, decide on the must-have vs. the nice-to-have qualifications. Do you need an accounting professional with an in-depth knowledge of accounting principles and technology, financial statements, risk assessments and budgets? Write that in your senior accountant job description so you don’t have to sort through unqualified applicants and can appeal to those you want most. Keep in mind, though, there’s no perfect candidate - not in this competitive market, anyway. More businesses are relaxing their job descriptions and hiring for the most critical skills. Smith advises hiring managers to be realistic and, when possible, be flexible, especially if they can offer training and professional development. “In today’s market,” Smith says, “companies should choose high-potential candidates who have the most critical skills, and then make a commitment to help them succeed as senior accountants.” FIND SENIOR ACCOUNTANTS 2. Make it a good fit Besides the skills, experience and education you’d like to see on a resume, a job description should provide a realistic idea of your corporate culture and what it’s like to work at your company. Is it a loud, boisterous office setting, or a quiet, corporate environment? What is the stress level, and how does the company encourage work-life balance? What kind of training and opportunities for career advancement does the company offer? What are the company's core values? “Show candidates how they can grow professionally if they work for you,” Smith says. Not only is this an opportunity to showcase the advantages you offer over the competition, it also helps job seekers decide whether yours is the kind of company they’d like to work at. This kind of self-selection can spare you a lot of time vetting applicants who wouldn’t be a good fit - or worse, the pain of making a bad hire. You not only want your new senior accountant to be comfortable in the company’s work environment, but you want him or her to mesh well with your team. 3. Work with a recruiter who knows how to hire a senior accountant A specialized staffing agency can help you with that job description - and so much more. The best recruiters know the candidate marketplace in your industry and geographic area. They can effectively evaluate experience, skills and culture fit, saving you time and money as they streamline the hiring process. With insider expertise, recruiters can also reach into their extensive networks and draw on talented professionals who aren’t aware of your open position and may not even be looking. “Many qualified senior accountants are happy in their current roles and would need a compelling reason to make a move,” says Carrie Lewis, a Finance Accounting recruiting manager in New Orleans. “Those are the passive job seekers we can help you target.” 4. Offer the right salary and benefits If you want to compete for the best senior accountants, you have to offer a competitive compensation package. The same can be said for retaining your top performers. Stay current on prevailing salary and hiring trends by reviewing leading industry resources. The 2019 Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance Professionals provides starting salaries for more than 190 positions, including senior accountants. The guide also shows you how to localize the national figures for your market. For example, the national midpoint salary* for a senior accountant is $77,750. You can adjust the figure to your city by using our Salary Calculator. It’s not just going to be about salary, of course. “If your company offers additional benefits, such as bonuses, flexible work arrangements or extra vacation time, that may convince top prospects to work for you,” Lewis says. Company culture, discussed above, as well as work-life balance, perks, benefits and other incentives can all play a significant role in your success at attracting and keeping top talent. 5. Know what to watch for in the job interview You can’t just “wing it” during the interview. Prepare for it like you would any other major decision. Think about what you want to know about the candidate - and if anyone else will join the interview, decide who will ask what. Your accounting interview questions should discuss how up to speed candidates are with tax code changes, what their experience is in completing complex financial projects with tight deadlines and how they go about preparing budgets. But along with the technical skills, Smith says, you’ll want to take stock of their soft skills, such as their ability to communicate financial information to non-financial audiences and work with teams. 6. Follow up with professional references Don’t dismiss this part of the hiring process as just a formality or a waste of time. It’s an important step to expand your understanding of the candidates' hard and soft skills, and the impact they've had at an organization, beyond the resume and interview. You might start by asking a former manager about a technical skill or strength the candidate possesses. For example: “I understand Kim took care of budget preparation and analysis for your company. Can you tell me more about her duties as staff accountant?” Take it a step further by asking about a potential limitation, such as how the candidate might do in a more senior role: “She hasn’t had any experience managing accounting staff, which is part of the job description for a senior accountant. How do you think she’ll perform as a manager?” Knowing how to hire a senior accountant is a valuable skill in itself, so pat yourself on the back for getting this far. What happens next? As Smith says, “Make your job offer, then do everything you can to keep them.” * A midpoint starting salary refers to a candidate with average experience and the necessary skills to get the job done. The role will likely be of average complexity or in a market where the competition for talent is moderate.

You’ve seen the mile-long job description asking for everything imaginable. Which skills and attributes are really going to land you the job?  Thomas L. Friedman's piece for The New York Times, “How to Get a Job at Google,” references an interview between Adam Bryant of the Times and Laszlo Bock, the senior vice president of people operations for Google. Bock spills the beans on what Google looks for when hiring new employees, and it isn’t just coding and good grades:  1.  Agile learning. Bock says one of the most important skills to hire for is  the ability to make sense out of random pieces of data on the fly, which Google tests for through behavioral interviewing. It can be difficult to show this on your  résumé, but certainly not impossible. Tell a STAR story: Think  about a time you were forced to make a decision based on lots of data or changing information. Now, break your story into four parts: Situatio n, Task, Actions and Results. You can wow recruiters by using a specific story during your conversation and by including an abbreviated version in your LinkedIn profile.  2.  Emergent leadership.  When faced with a problem as part of a team, how do you react? Have you ever been on a team where no one offers solutions to the problem or steps up to try and fix it? According to  Bock, Google looks for leaders who come forward with solutions when things go wrong. Holding a powerful position or traditional leadership roles aren’t enough. Emergent leadership is when a  team member comes forward to intervene  during a crisis and easily steps back into his or her team role again. A great way to prove your leadership qualities is to get recommendations on LinkedIn from peers and supervisors that speak to your ability to step forward.  3.  Intellectual humility.  Do you take ownership of your work and ideas, yet know when to back down to better ideas? Intellectual humility means you don’t let your ego get in the way. Bock describes intellectual humility as the ability to fight for ideas adamantly, but when new information is introduced, having the ability to embrace the new direction that evolves. Humility is also the ability to do whatever it takes to get a job done. There is nothing too far below you  Ã¢€" in fact, taking out the trash can be great exercise.  4. Being  inquisitive and loving to  learn  trump expertise.  Bock noted that employees who possess the desire to learn and an inquisitive nature sometimes come to the same conclusions that an expert would. Even more fascinating is that the nonexpert can come up with a completely new idea or solution because they don’t have the expertise or historical perspective. This can lead to innovative solutions and new directions. Depending on the industry you intend to work in, innovation may not be the most valued element of the corporate culture. Learn and appreciate which industries are adamant about expertise, an d know when to showcase your love of learning.Truth Be ToldWill putting “team player, innovative and strong leadership” on your  résumé  get you the interview?  Probably  not. Résumés are reviewed for technical skills, and  it isn’t until the interview process that soft skills can be assessed  adequately. So why is it that hiring managers screen  résumés for technical skills  when employers value soft skills most? Is there a breakdown in communication? Is it because technology can’t screen for the soft skills? Or is it because too few employers can quantify, measure or label the performance associated with these soft skills? Let’s hope that’s where the next great advancement in recruiting happens.

High-Paying Programming Languages You Can Learn

High-Paying Programming Languages You Can Learn High-Paying Programming Languages You Can Learn Ever think about becoming a computer programmer? Online news site Quartz made a ranking of salary value in programming languages, from highest to lowest, based on job postings. Here are five programming languages you can learn to make yourself more competitive and earn more money, and you can learn many of them online. Ruby (on Rails) Ruby is a great language for web applications. Many major web services use it, such as Twitter and Hulu. And then there’s Ruby on Rails, which is the most used framework for Ruby. Many agree that it’s easier to learn than other languages, such as C. The Quartz article ranks Ruby on Rails as the highest-earning programming skill. You can find many Ruby tutorials online. Objective C The programming language behind OSX and iOS apps, it’s easy to see why Objective C is an in-demand language. iPhone owns a huge share of the U.S. smartphone market, and countless businesses have iPhone apps. If you’re interested in giving Objective C a try, there’s a great tutorial at Code School. Python Python (named after Monty Python in the 1980s) is, like Ruby, an intuitive language to learn and use. It has a rabid fan base and is the backbone of the popular Instagram social network. Python is a scripting language that has multiple examples of implementation in different industries, including the film industry; Industrial Light and Magic uses Python to extend their software capabilities in-house. There’s a whole list at  Python.org with further examples. If you’re interested in learning more about Python, check out this overview on the Treehouse Blog. Java Java is one of the most popular programming languages in the world, and for good reason: It has very little operating requirements, meaning it can run on multiple platforms. Java is also part of the framework for building Android applications, so it’s a language that is in demand even today.  Oracle provides Java documentation to help get you started. C C (originally known as “C with Classes”) is the oldest programming language on this list. It was first introduced in the early 1980s. It’s the backbone of every single piece of software that you use every day. C is used for performance-intensive tasks, such as video compression. Cplusplus.com has a tutorial that can help you get started. You Don’t Have to Pick Just One Knowing one of these five languages can help you earn a higher salary, but you don’t have to specialize in just one. If possible, familiarize yourself with a few of these languages. Then, if one falls out of style, you have another language proficiency to fall back on. As we’ve seen in the past, specializing can lead to you becoming obsolete in your field. In any field, you should always be learning new skills and technologies. And with all the free/affordable online options available, it is easier than ever to level up.

Licensure and Certification Two Different Forms of Professional Credentials

Licensure and Certification Two Different Forms of Professional Credentials Licensure and Certification Two Different Forms of Professional Credentials Licensure and Certification: Two Different Forms of Professional Credentials BY MITCHELL A. THORNTON, PH.D., P.E. Reprinted with permission from Todays Engineer (May 2014) Copyright 2014 IEEE. Professional credentials can come in many forms including experience, education, licensure, and certification. While experience and education are self-explanatory, the differences between licensure and certification are not as clear. The American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES) recently released a new position paper entitled What is the Difference Between Licensing and Certification for Engineering? This informative position paper is freely available to all interested persons and is accessible from theAAES website. The position paper was produced by the Professional Licensure Working Group (PLWG) within AAES. AAES is a multidisciplinary organization comprised of professional engineering societies including IEEE. The mission of AAES is To serve as one voice for the U.S. engineering profession. This relatively young organization was founded in 1979 with the idea that effectiveness in public awareness and public policy could be maximized through all the various engineering societies that represent specific disciplines joining together and leveraging member resources. Within the AAES, there are several working groups composed of members from the various societies including the PLWG. The PLWG recognized that a wide array of certifications exist among the various disciplines and that these certifications along with PE and other licenses can lead to confusion among those who are evaluating credentials. With this viewpoint in mind, the PLWG embarked on a survey and study that ultimately resulted in the production of the position paper. Licensure is generally the process by which an authoritative body, such as the government, grants permission to an individual to engage in a particular activity. Certification is generally in the form of recognition granted by a non-governmental agency signifying that an individual possess specialized knowledge or skills. While it is not the intent of this article to summarize the position paper, some of the typical differentiating factors between a license and a certification are listed here. Typical Characteristics of Licensure: Licensure requires some form of demonstration of minimal competence in engaging in an activity in a safe manner. The licensed activity is usually one that could result in damage to public health, safety, or welfare if practiced by an incompetent individual. Licenses in the US are usually granted at the state rather than the federal level based on interpretations of constitutional law. Licenses are often time-limited and require some form of continuing educational requirement on the part of the licensee. Licensure requires demonstration of some degree of competence as determined through testing or verifiable and applicable experience. Licensure may require prerequisite levels of education in specific bodies of knowledge. Typical Characteristics of Certification: In contrast to the concept of minimal competence, certifications vary widely in scope with some granted for the demonstration of basic knowledge and others requiring sophisticated mastery of an advanced topic. Certification is often a voluntary credential that is not required by an authoritative body. Certifying bodies are often professional organizations or even commercial entities. Some certifications are designed to produce a revenue stream as well as designation in the form of a credential. Perhaps another term should be mentioned within this discussion of credentialing instruments; that of registration. Registration is in some sense a more general term since it simply means that one is listed on a roster or registry. From this point of view, being registered can apply to a maintained list of licensees or of those holding certifications. It is common to see reference to a registered professional engineer and while this may be technically correct, it is more common today to find the terms licensed professional engineer in regard to those holding the PE credential. In summary, both licensure and registration are valid forms of credentials and each has its own unique purpose in the engineering profession. One of the most important purposes of a credential is to allow those who are unskilled in an area to evaluate or to obtain some degree of confidence in those who are skilled. From this point of view the AAES position paper is a valuable source of information for those who are seeking a qualified individual to perform professional services. The position paper is also useful for working engineers in that it clarifies the differences and similarities of the licensure and certification. Mitchell A. Thornton, Ph.D., P.E., is a professor of computer science and engineering and a professor of electrical engineering at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He is a member of IEEE-USAs Licensure and Registration Committee.

How to Write a Career Change Cover Letter [+Example]

How to Write a Career Change Cover Letter [+Example] How to Write a Career Change Cover Letter [+Example] How to Write a Persuasive Career Change Cover Letter Transitioning to a new career can seem daunting. If your background is in an unrelated field, you might wonder - “how can I win over a hiring manager?” If this is you, a career change cover letter can be invaluable for highlighting your passion and transferable skills. Let’s explore how to write a cover letter for a career change. 4 Tips for Writing a Cover Letter for a Career Change Hiring managers view applicants with little to no industry experience as risky, so you need a persuasive career change cover letter to win them over. Ease their concerns through your writing, and prove that you’ll be a valuable asset to their team. You can earn their favor by displaying your transferable skills, explaining the reason behind your career change, and demonstrating why you’re the best fit for their company. #1. Highlight Your Transferable Skills Even if you’ve never held a position in your desired field, you still have many skills to offer. No matter where your experience lies, you’ve likely honed soft skills that are vital for any job. Here are some versatile soft skills to include in your cover letter for switching careers: Communication skills (verbal, written, and listening) Leadership skills Critical thinking Adaptability Teamwork Interpersonal skills Ability to work independently Creativity You may also have technical skills that you can transfer to a new field. For instance, if you have experience with certain computer programs, note them on your resume and elaborate on them in your career change cover letter. Other technical skills you may have include: Data analysis Agile project management Budget management Research Technical writing While your resume is a snapshot of your employment history, your cover letter provides a platform to detail your experience and sell yourself as a candidate. It’s your responsibility to prove your value, so don’t expect employers to understand the experience you gained in your last career. Be clear and concise about your skills and how they translate to the open position. #2. Explain Why You’re Seeking a Career Transition In a world of ladder-climbers, your choice to change careers will raise questions. You must be prepared to answer them. Be honest in your career change cover letter about why you are changing direction. Avoid using negative terms to describe your previous jobs. Instead, identify the aspects you enjoyed in your last field and how they connect to your future career. What drew you in this particular direction? Was it current events or the discovery of a newfound passion? Whatever your reasoning, be honest with the hiring manager and you’ll earn points with them - as long as your answer isn’t exceptionally negative. #3. Show Passion for Your New Direction Employers want to see more than just skills - they want to know that you’ll be committed to the job. You are leaving behind one career, so you need to prove that the next one is the right one. You may dream of a job closer to nature. Hiring managers will lose interest if you seem tentative. You don’t want to come across as a serial career changer, so use your cover letter to convey your passion and back it up with anecdotal support. Tell the story behind the change of direction and how you discovered your passion. When you explain the reason for your career transition, focus on your excitement for your new path. If you’ve been reading industry-related books, taking classes, or volunteering for a relevant cause, share your efforts and show them what you’ve learned from that. You must be invested in your new career direction, so don’t shy away from discussing the steps you’ve taken to succeed. #4. Prove You Understand The Company Your passion for a new industry is great, but employers also want to know why their company is the best fit for your transition. Tailor your career change cover letter template to each job you apply for, since being genuine about why a company attracted you to work there is essential. Hiring managers have read countless resumes and cover letters - they can see right through a generic one-size-fits-all letter. The best cover letters are tailored to showcase your knowledge about the company. You should always research an organization before applying to a job, but it’s critical when making a career transition. Learn about its values, past projects or clients, and leadership. These are great points to mention in your cover letter to prove that you understand the company. Plus, you’ll find yourself prepared if you’re invited to an interview. My proudest accomplishment was preparing my younger sister for her prom night - she was voted prom queen that evening. Because of my passion for this artform, I’m applying for the makeup artist position at Studio 96. I’ve served in several customer service positions since I graduated high school, in which I’ve honed my people skills, increased upsales by 17%, and improved my ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations. However, I’ve found that customer service doesn’t satisfy my creative side. Thus, I’m eager to join Studio 96, a company I’ve been a fan of since I learned the avant-garde approach to makeup application developed under your founder Bianca Del Vanjie. To meet Studio 96’s needs, I’ve completed the 150-hour course in Makeup Artistry offered by the Los Angeles-based Sonique Academy in my spare time. I’ve also volunteered for the Look Good, Feel Better organization, where I boosted the self-esteem of patients with cancer by giving them makeovers. I am looking forward to hearing back from you. I can be reached at [Your Phone Number] or [Your Email]. Thank you for considering my application. Sincerely, [Your Name] Conclusion Starting a new career path can be extremely rewarding despite its obstacles, so putting in the effort to get noticed is worthwhile. Why Writing Skills Are Important in Criminology

Why Writing Skills Are Important in Criminology Why Writing Skills Are Important in Criminology Careers in criminology and criminal justice certainly require a wide variety of skills. Among the most important skills and abilities, those looking for jobs in criminology will need, no matter their specific field, is the ability to communicate in various forms. Written language is perhaps the single most valuable skill career seekers should possess. Written communication is vital in every aspect of the criminology career. Police officers write reports; criminologists issue proposals, policy papers and studies; and forensic science technicians produce written records of their findings and conclusions. Writing is one of the most fundamental abilities in every career option within criminology. Here are a few reasons why you should want to hone your writing skills now so you can be more effective in the future: Impressions Matter Face it; first impressions do matter, whether you want them to or not. The simple fact is that in most cases, your written reports will be the first and only introduction youll ever have to some very important and high-ranking people. Whether youre presenting a survey or a study youve just completed or youre writing an arrest report, your written word will be seen and reviewed by judges, politicians, lawyers and the press. A poorly written report can leave someone with a bad impression of not only your abilities and intelligence but your dedication, as well. Often, people will think badly of someone who they perceive has not taken the time to complete a well-written or thorough report. Conversely, a report that is well written can make a tremendous first impression and lead to new contacts and new opportunities down the road. Whether you like it or not, it matters what people think of your work product. Dire Consequences In the case of police officers, detectives, and crime scene investigators, a poorly worded or badly organized report can mean the difference between a criminal being brought to justice or going free. In many instances, state and district attorneys will decline to prosecute defendants if the original arrest document is wrought with errors of fact or if it reads as if a kindergartner wrote it. Reports need to be well organized and written so that they articulate the thoughts you are trying to convey. If they fail to get your point across, they will have served no purpose, and your effort will be wasted. If you are trying to recommend that a legislature or municipal council adopt a new policy, they may ignore your advice because they lack faith in your intelligence or theyre unable to follow your disjointed thought process. For police officers and investigators, if a state or district attorney lacks faith in your ability to articulate the facts of the case, or if you fail to do so in your report, the defendant will go free. Poorly written reports will also leave you wide open to attacks from defense attorneys, who will try to portray you as incompetent and negligent. Dont give them the ammunition they need! Effective Communication is Key Communication is vital to achieving the goal of voluntary compliance with the law. Criminal justice and criminology workers must be able to articulate their actions and reasoning to the public to maintain their support. Police reports are the first place media outlets will look when a high profile incident occur. Without the ability to effectively communicate the details of the event, public misconceptions prevail. In the same manner, criminologists must be able to present their research and findings coherently to persuade others to take up their positions effectively. In every instance, the ability to write well is not only a valuable skill but a vital one. To be successful and effective in your chosen profession, you need to start working on your ability to use the written language.
